Pickleball 4.0+ Open Play

There are two challenge courts on the very East end for higher level players, but they bounce around too.

You need to watch the games and figure out what court to jump on. No paddle system, you just wait at the court you want to play on and you will cycle in.

Morning time at Municipal courts is going to be your best bet to find 4.0+ level players. It can be hit or miss during the weekdays for open play. Saturday and Sunday morning are busy and there are 4.0+ players around.

Pickleball Open Play Guidelines

All courts are scheduled for open play from 8 a.m. to sunset. Exceptions include parks and recreation approved leagues, tournaments programs, and other rentals.

How we share the courts

  • Incoming players should find a court where the level of play matches their ability, enter the court between points, and wait on the court bench. Say hello and communicate with players to make sure enough people will be staying on the court after the current game ends.
  • Games are played to 11, win by 2.
  • If 1 or 2 players are waiting on the bench, winners can stay on the court for a second game. If additional players arrive during the second game, the winners of that game must rotate out, win or lose. Do not ask people to sit out more than one game.
  • If 3 or 4 players are waiting on the bench, then an equal number of players from the prior game must vacate the court once the game ends, and the waiting players come on to play.
  • Players may not refuse to allow others to rotate in. Have an open mind about playing with individuals who are new to the courts or whose skill level may be lower than yours. If the skill level is below the majority of players, be willing to play a friendly match and then help players find a more appropriate court.
  • Singles matches, practice, drilling, and any prearranged play groups must switch to open play if people are waiting for courts.

Looked online to find a place to play pickleball while visiting for the weekend. The group was so inviting and gave me the layout of the courts and how it works. Great time and when I go to Santa Barbara I will be back for sure.
M.A. EatsArt: ★★★★★
$6.00 to pay to the parking attendant is a lot for an out-of-towner to play here. The courts are fantastic and the rotation system is easy and welcoming. Shaded seating is a definite plus! Tennis courts are adjacent, and bathrooms, water fountains are a definite plus.
Kevin Unterreiner: ★★★★★
Great place for tennis and pickleball. Only $6 per day for use and season passes available
Sean McDermott: ★★★★★
Great option for open play Pickleball. Annual pass is $125 or $153 depending on city residence. $6 per person for a day pass. Plenty of open play every morning with weekends particularly busy.
Margarita Vargas: ★★★★★
Love that they close after 8:00 it gives time for 8:00-5:00 working people to play so thank you very much.
Ramsin Eivaz: ★★★★★
Municipal pickleball tennis courts are the best place in Santa Barbara to play pickleball. It offers open courts and open play all the time and most people look for their own level and find a court and sit on the bench. Also you can get a yearly pass so you don't have to pay the $5 pass every time you walk in. I think it's the best place. It contains a total of 16 pickleball courts at this point and sometimes believers are not. All the 16 are taken and they're people waiting on the sideline so if you like pickleball definitely come and check it out and make sure you go for the right court with your level so everybody will be happy and happy New Year
Amber Workman: ★★★★★
Love these courts. They have a new playground and it is awesome. Most importantly, the staff is wonderful, especially Nancy who runs the place! I recommend you check it out if you haven't been there because they have something for everyone including kids lessons (Chris McBride the tennis pro is great), adult lesson and pickle ball.
Tony Beauregard: ★★★★★
Traveling to Santa Barbara and decided to look at the pickleball courts. This place has 8 really nice courts with a $5 fee per day for visitors. When I'm in town, I plan on playing here! Tennis courts are also nice and the single member of the staff I encountered was courteous and made me feel welcome. I like the place!
Sal Marciano: ★★★★★
Nice facility with 8 tennis courts and 12 dedicated pickleball courts all individually fenced. Three tennis courts have lights, none of the pickleball courts have lights. Tennis cost is $8 a day to play or buy a annual pass. Pickleball is $5 a day or an annual pass is about $70. Front gate opens at 8am everyday.
David Toneff: ★★★★★
Great group of folks that meet here every morning to play pickleball. Thank you to everyone who gave me and my wife the space & time to learn how to play the game. Update, we returned to Santa Barbara from Tampa in 2023. The play, the people & the courts were even better than a 2022.. Thank you to John, Randall, Hugh, Tristan,, Steven, Sam Scott & Sid for making this Tampa boy feel like one of the boys. What a great group of guys. I pray that you maintain lifelong relationships with each other. You're truly blessed to have each other. Sincerely David
Lisa Maraszek: ★★★★★
My first time playing Pickleball here, and the place was bumpin' with players of all ages! Nice, clean bathrooms, too. Easy access right off the freeway. Must pay a day use fee of $5.00 if not a member.
Ferran: ★★★★
Nice courts to play. $8 per person per day unless you buy the membership. The only downside is that it’s literally next to the 101 freeway which is noisy and maybe not the best place to deeply breath. Very nice people.
Mimi Zheng: ★★★★
The fee attendant (Mike) was incredibly rude for no reason. The courts are nice though, so after the initial irritation of being talked down to, it was a fun time.
Ossey Aldapa: ★★★★★
Rif-raf beware! These courts are frequently patroled by police. Well maintained! The staff doesn't mind dogs, just follow the rules: keep pups on a leash and clean up after them. That being said, you need a permit to be using the courts to begin with, available through parks and rec I'm sure.
Leslene Sagisi: ★★★★
4/5 because there are only lights on the tennis courts. There are SO many great pickleball courts but *zero* of them have lights :(

Courts are in good shape, and beautiful view of the mountains in the background. Constant roar of the freeway ruins the ambience.

I'm new to pickle ball, I come from zero sports ball background so unlike many - I do not have a tennis background which helps when starting this game. That being said, I'm invested, I'm trying, I'm putting in my time to get better and improve my game. I've been playing for about 2 months. My guy was a junior tennis champ so he's got this even if he's newer to the game. We were on vacation for our anniversary and brought our paddles to play while away from home - keep that practice up! We saw this place is $5/pp for the day to park and use the facilities - deal! 12 courts are dedicated to pickle ball at the far end of the park after the tennis courts. Everyone was so intense on their game play that no one wanted even entertain playing with the newbie (me). I don't need people to play, I'm out there for my own game too, we had an awesome practice. The courts are exceptionally maintained and separated. My grip, one guy felt it necessary not once but TWICE to share with me how much he thought we were wasting space on the court since no one wanted to play with us. Here's the thing, everyone has to start somewhere and you know what - I felt awesome that day even though this guy tried to steal my sunshine. He got more real estate than he deserves but sharing for other new players, don't let people like this get you down. You deserve to practice and try just as much as someone who does it "better".Courts are beautiful, bathroom is available through a code but don't come here looking for a community vibe unless you can bring the A game for play. They aren't messing around and not interested if you are anywhere below that threshold. Noted, and heard - message received loud 'n clear. This is not the place to go when looking for some Grace from other players.

Went to play Pickleball there. They are very, very clickish there. At time very difficult to get a game. Constant traffic noise due to hwy 101.I have traveled many different areas/places and this place is sure not the friendliest group! Today played there , one of the players got upset she didn't want to wait. But there some friendly players, some. Thank you to them. There is a 5$ fee for one day for visitors.
Kim Peterson: ★
Horrible tennis! Never have paid for use of courts anywhere before. 12 courts, but only 1-2 courts being used each night. I Played in Santa Rosa with 9 courts. People waiting in line for a turn. I have to pay $8 and wait to see if anyone is going to show up to play. How do families play: parents have to come up with membership to go hit with their kids? Very DEAD tennis community!
Murat Kalelioglu: ★
Dude we came here to play tennis for an hour. Couldn't find anyone to pay 8 USD fee. Tried calling one their offices, which is freaking couple miles away, and they said we don't know where to reserve the courts. Ridiculously operated place to play. Try to get a hold of someone at least a week ago to reserve your time here.
