Summary / Description

6 dedicated outdoor pickleball courts with portable nets and lights. Converted from hockey rink. Surrounded by trees with some shade in the afternoon. The Lafayette Rink is a Multi-Sport Facility equipped with full sized hockey dasher boards, basketball hoops, and pickle ball. Lafayette has gotten really crowded. There are usually only 4 courts because two courts are reserved for lessons. All nets are on caster wheels or are light weight and easy to move. There are no staff available to assist with moving nets. If you go in the afternoon there are fewer people. Parking right beside the rink. Restrooms available.

PICKLEBALL DROP-IN PLAY

• Drop-in play is available while courts are not reserved for class or rentals.
• Drop-in play isn't available when entire “Rink” is reserved.
• Please refer to calendar for court availability.

PICKLEBALL GUIDELINES

• The Lafayette Multi-Sport Rink is a reservation facility, and you MUST have a permit for organized play and fee programs. Single-family and drop-in individual use is allowed if the rink is not reserved. Rink Hours: From Dawn until Stadium Lights turn off
• Please ALWAYS be respectful of neighbors by keeping noise levels to a minimum, especially in the mornings and evenings. Failure to comply will result in reduced hours or loss of drop-in programs. You MUST fill out the Waiver for Drop In Pickle Ball. Rink Schedule and Waiver can be found at www.LoveLafayette.org/rink
• Play one game to 11 points (win by 2), then, rotate off the court. Parties of 2-4 players who are signed up on the board, may take the court when it is their turn to rotate. They can practice, drill, or play Cutthroat/Australian Doubles for 20 minutes, before rotating off the court.
• There is a sign-up board to play. Enter names on the sign-up board in the spaces provided in a group of no more than four. Only names can be entered. No plus one, two or three. A name can only be entered if present and ready to play. Players who are playing cannot be one of the names entered.
• Call your own foot faults at the non-volley zone line and the baseline where you serve.
• When people are waiting keep warmups short and you must call out your score loud enough so those waiting can hear your score. When the game ends, leave quickly; let others know the court is open. When your group is called to play, move quickly to the open court.
• No pets are allowed on any court.
• Warn nearby court if your ball rolls onto their court, “Ball on Court”. Stop play immediately when a ball rolls onto your court.
• Only engage in sportsmanlike conduct and encourage others to do the same. Adhere to the USA Pickleball Association Code of Conduct.
• Treat others with respect and courtesy on and off the courts. Do not coach others unless asked.
• The receiving team determines when a ball is out. The hitting team should remain silent unless asked for help by the receiving team.
• Hard hitters aka “bangers” be aware of the skill and physical capability of who is on the other side. Think placement over power. Safety is everyone’s primary concern.
• Be inclusive and aware of who is waiting to play, particularly strangers.
• No smoking or vaping and alcoholic beverages are allowed in or around the rink. No food or drinks are allowed on the courts, except water.
• Appropriate athletic footwear is required. For your own safety wear shoes made for pickleball or tennis.
• Pickleball nets are to be used for pickleball play and no other purpose.
• Eye protection is recommended.
• Follow Rink Rules about sharing with other Rink uses. Welcome other uses during shared use times. Rude or unwelcoming behavior could result in reduced Pickle Ball hours. After 1pm players MUST clear up to 2 courts IF other users (hockey, basketball, skating, etc.) want to use courts for other activities. Failure will result in pickleball ending at 1PM every day. Other uses please write your use on the white board to communicate your desire to use the two courts. No time limit on this use.
• All paid programs and lessons are offered through the City website. Individuals taking payment for classes or lessons on the rink are in violation of City Ordinance. Individuals running or participating in paid lessons or classes not offered through the City website may cause drop in to be cancelled for everyone.
• Drop in pickleball play is for ALL ages and skill levels.
• Observe the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.

RINK RULES

• The multi-sport rink is to be used for specific court sports such as basketball and regular non-contact hockey. Recreational skating is also permitted. Unsportsmanlike behavior, or other rough play, will result in removal from the court.
• No skating in the halls or parking lots of the Community Center.
• All trash must be removed from player benches, court, bleacher area and surrounding areas.
• No gum or food of any kind allowed inside the multi-sport rink.
• No smoking and no alcoholic beverages are allowed in or around the multi-sport rink.
• Appropriate athletic footwear required.
• FOR HOCKEY: All players must wear full equipment (helmet, shin/knee guards, face cage, elbow guards, gloves and mouth guard).
• Pickleball must follow Rink Rules about sharing with other Rink uses. Welcome other uses during shared use times. Rude or unwelcoming behavior could result in reduced Pickle Ball hours. After 1 pm players MUST clear up to 2 courts IF other users (hockey, basketball, skating, etc.) want to use courts for other activities. Failure will result in pickleball ending at 1 pm every day. SUNDAY MIXER PLAY
Mixer Play, held Sunday mornings, on two courts, starting at 9:30 am Strangers needn't find players to play with. They just put their paddle in the first rack and the system takes over from there. Winners of games will play other winners and those who don't win (not losers) will play their next game with others who lost. Winners who played with one another during their last game, must split should they go out together in their next game. That avoids two people dominating play in the winners’ bracket.

Basically, it separates skill levels by the results of a player's last game and increases the probability that a player will meet people they don't know.

This is not “Newbie Play” that is limited to beginners or first-time rink visitors. The “Mixer Play” is open to all and players of all skill levels are urged to play and are appreciated. The more advanced players can be very helpful to those who are just learning. It's a good time for advanced players to practice hitting the ball to a location where it can be returned. Placement over power is more effective, particularly among very advanced players. Moreover, most of us aren't overpowering anyway.

Mixer play is an attempt to create an age-friendly entry point for players of various skill levels to meet new players and participate during a high demand time slot. Beginners are welcome in mixer play and whiteboard play.
