Pickleball Trial Program

Holbrook-Palmer Park in Atherton is currently half way through its six-month pickleball trial. The initial trial period will run through July and there are currently no plans for after the trial, said Robert Ovadia, Atherton’s director of public works.

For the trial, the park has striped one of their tennis courts to accommodate two pickleball courts, big enough for a maximum of 12 people to play on at once. The Holbrook-Palmer tennis courts are currently on a reservation system. Hours for pickleball are limited from morning to noon daily and after 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Pickleball courts at Holbrook-Palmer are well-maintained, spacious and always clean. Pickleball players would love for the park to expand its hours for pickleball and install a drop-in system of play.

Other pickleball courts at Nealon Park in Menlo Park and Mitchell Park in Palo Alto, currently have a drop-in system. Holbrook-Palmer Park began its trial through a reservation system on Jan. 21.

Atherton resident Don Keller suggests a combination of a reservation and drop-in system moving forward. He said that Holbrook-Palmer hasn’t yet developed a strong pickleball community in Atherton because of the restrictive nature of the reservation system. Keller said other public pickleball courts across the Peninsula are open to drop-ins.

ā€œIt would be terrific if Holbrook-Palmer moves to more of a drop in arrangement so that they can build a community oriented place,ā€ said Keller.

Fantastic park in the neighborhood. This park has everything you could ask for - dense trees, some historic buildings, children's playground, strength training equipments, tennis courts, big fields. The best part is this park has many smaller parts and tracks around them, that gives you plenty of options to choose from. Highly recommend

Historic Park. You can walk your dogs around and some interesting buildings that used to be part of the farm that you can look at. Plenty of parking. Also, a daycare inside.

I love this park. From the sand area for the toddler 2-5 through the older kiddos play ground. Nice park. Playground: Sand area for toddlers 2-5 is secured gates. Restrooms: Super clean. Picnic area: Nice area.

Lovely, large park. Huge grass field with perimeter walking path, batting cages, baseball diamond, etc. Great for well-behaved dogs.

This is a beautiful, well-organized park that's a local gem. I recently attended a Celebration of Life event there, arrived early, and walked through the entire park. What a delight! There was a group exercising on a lawn with Bosu balls, people dog walking, children playing. Many of the trees have small signs with their common and scientific names. Most surprising was a small grove of redwood trees. This is a real oasis of peace and enjoyment.

Great Park. Very green. Has 2 playgrounds. 1 for smaller children that is gated. Large field to play sports. Restrooms: Very clean restrooms.
Dale Kallstrom: ā˜…ā˜…ā˜…ā˜…ā˜…
Great place for a little bit of everything. Walks, runs, picnics and a small doggy park for our canine friends. There's a playground here for the little ones too, and the whole park is very dog friendly ( leashes used to be optional but have since been heavily enforced ). Keep your dogs leashes at all times here. I don't come here specifically because of this anymore but if you do get caught with your dog off leash, you will be fined

The landscaping can be improved. Hope it can have more lawn area. The playground can be improved too. Interesting people would assume the town of Atherton has more fund for the park system but this park does not stand out in terms of facilities compared to other parks in neighboring cities. Probably people living here have big enough yard, no park needed, haha.

Great, quiet park with easy parking 99% of the time. The bathroom by the baseball field is MUCH better than the one near the playground.

On a Saturday afternoon prior to Easter Sunday… kinda empty. I expected a nicer and clean playground. As you can see from the pictures, this play structure needs some updates and attention. The city of Atherton should have the funds to make this happen. The grass was very well maintained and the area over all was clean. Once they update the playground this park has the potential to be a 5 star park but currently it’s just a 3 star. I wouldn’t go again or suggest anyone visit it now. Playground: Needs to be updated and or power washed. Restrooms: Has. I didn’t use. Dog-friendliness: Yes. Picnic area: Yes
